Design and Technology

Free school school supplies education vector At Cromer Road we strive to inspire and engage children in Design and Technology, providing them with     the creativity and problem-solving skills necessary for success in their future lives.

Design and Technology gives children the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of designing and making functional products. Our Design and Technology curriculum nurtures creativity and innovation through design opportunities and enables our children to explore the designed and made world we live in. It teaches our children to be inquisitive, resourceful and provides them with enthusiasm and passion needed to succeed.

Our aims and objectives for our Design and Technology curriculum are as follows:

  • to deliver programmes of study for Key Stages 1 and 2 of the National Curriculum in Design and Technology;
  • to develop imaginative thinking in children and to enable them to talk about what they like and dislike when designing and making;
  • to enable children to talk about how things work, and to draw and model their ideas;
  • to encourage children to select appropriate tools and techniques for making a product, whilst following safe procedures;
  • to explore attitudes towards the made world and how we live and work within it;
  • to develop an understanding of technological processes, products, and their manufacture, and their contribution to our society;
  • to foster enjoyment, satisfaction and purpose in designing and making

Free school school supplies education vector Starting from Year 1, we use the Projects on a Page planning tools, which incorporate the National   Curriculum requirements and ensure a progression of skills and knowledge throughout the key stages. These projects encourage children to engage in discussions about the products they will design, the intended audience, and the purposes the products will serve. Lessons follow a structured process that includes:

  • Designing
  • Making
  • Evaluating

Throughout projects children are encouraged to think critically and adapt their plans when needed. They have the opportunity to reflect and to evaluate changes they have or would have made to their final product.

Our Design and Technology curriculum is progressive and ensures that children build upon previous skills. Key vocabulary is shared at the start of each project and children become confident using the identified vocabulary while completing their project.

The following key Design and Technology areas are covered:

  • Mechanisms
  • Structures
  • Food
  • Textiles
  • Mechanical Systems
  • Electrical Systems

Children are also provided with opportunities to revisit prior learning, which helps embed the skills they have acquired. Furthermore, children make connections between Design and Technology and other subjects, such as Mathematics, Science, Computing, and Art. These connections contribute to the further development of their learning.
